I am currently at the Weeksville Heritage Center. Weeksville is a town in Brooklyn built by Black people, maintained by Black people, and safeguarded by Black people starting in 1838. It is so moving to be able to still see the fruits of their labor in 2019 - almost 200 years later. I wish I could see them now and say "Wow! Y'all did it." I am so happy for them. I imagine that they wanted me to be able to see this. I imagine they wanted me to know they were thinking about me. I imagine they wanted me to know it is true that we are a self-determined people who can do anything and have done everything. All I want is to continue this legacy. At the core of this tour is the desire to continue this legacy.

I just want to build something with a community that can stand the test of change. I am so happy that I came here. They did it. And now me, a girl from Des Moines, IA, now knows about it and is letting it fuel her dreams. I know it had to be hard as hell. I know they sacrificed a lot but now they KNOW it was worth it. Many many thanks to their love and commitment and brilliance and may I attain just half of those things to move their brilliance forward.
